The Importance of Fear In Scary Times
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10
We deal with so many issues in the world. Every day there is news from around the globe about turmoil and chaos. The world has changed so rapidly. Sometimes, members of our community feel nervous. Under that nervousness is fear. In addition, October has become a month of the celebration of fear” as entertainment. Scary movies, books, and costumes are all presented in honor of Halloween.
It is good to remember that Scripture advises believers not to fear. However, the book of Proverbs tells believers to fear. The book's writer is not talking about experiencing general fear, and he recommends that people of God learn to fear the Lord. We are not to fear God because we think God is mean and vengeful. Instead, we are to be God-fearing. If we are God-fearing, we are reminded to stand in wonder of a mighty God. We are to offer respect and honor to our God. We are to honor a holy God with our worship. Above all, we are to develop a loving relationship with this holy God who loves us. Our God loves us so much that all that is part of God's kingdom is ours to have in this life and the next.
As we read books of the Bible, we can find more reasons to respect, love, and serve God. Our dedicated prayers or conversations with God can help us to strengthen our loving relationships with God. The more we know about God can cause us to be God-fearing people, and that is a good thing.
